This book challenges the notion that creating brilliant theatrical productions requires tyrannical directors or temperamental designers. Viewing the theatrical production process from the perspectives of the producer, director, playwright, actor, designer, stage manager, dramaturg and crew person, Cohen provides the techniques, exercises and language that promote successful collaborative skills in the theatre. Collaboration is vital to successful theatre making and Working Together in Theatre is the first book to show how leadership and collaboration can be combined to make every theatrical production far greater than the sum of its many parts. This is a well-written book and gives a lot of insight/wisdom into the collaborative process of theatre. It is not, however, an in-depth reflection for those ALREADY well versed in theatres practices. I would highly recommend this as an "introduction" to the collaborative process, or a gentle reminder for those who are lacking some of the social graces of cooperative practices. I didn't learn a lot of new information, but was pleasantly reminded of some good practices, and got a few interesting insights in the anecdotes shared. It is well written and would be highly recommended for anyone teaching an "Intro to Theatre" class, or anyone who wants to know why and how artists create together.
