Reviews

This book for me embodies the best and the very worst of Dover Press. First, credit is due to editor Jeff Menges who has recently published a whole series of books on the artists of the Golden Age of Illustration. The Dover books are reasonably priced and show a wide array of the selected artists works. For me, they are a starting point from which to start searching for original illustrated volumes. Now for what I really dislike about Dover. A book printing revolution has taken place in the last twenty years. The quality and resolution of images have significantly improved. Unfortunately, Dover Press is stuck in the 1970's and the images they publish are washed out and printed on low quality glossy paper. In addition, the biographical information on the illustrators is superficial and not especially well written. In the final analysis, if you can afford a more expensive book about the work of N.C. Wyeth, you should purchase it. Hopefully, this review and others like it will encourage Dover to invest in better printing presses.
